Net-Station? Online Community originally in the works since 1997
Project “Moccasin 5″, the code name for a test project that took place in Europe way back in 1997. Chris Deering, former President of Sony Entertainment, has revealed that Sony has been working on the concept of online communities since the early days of the PS1
A box called the Net-Station was used to connect PCs to TVs, and utilized a text-based chat program. Tested in Europe, it was well received, even in the US. According to Deering, the guys who launched the PS1 were also developing a Facebook-style online community. There was even a “Playstation TV Channel” tested for the PS2, but never saw the day of light due to the slow adoption of Broadband.
