Do cats understand being chastised?

This topic has been bugging at my side for the last couple of days.  A little back story.  My cat got himself hurt, and so when my dad saw him hurt, he began yelling at my cat for going out too much, getting hurt, and not learning his lessons.  And then my dad threatened to kick my cat out of the house once I leave (jokingly of course).

Well, it was funny what happened afterward.  Once my cat was let out of the house to go do his kitty business, he didn’t come back.  In fact, he left for 3 days!  He finally returned home, and it was a funny scene to see my dad apologizing to my cat.

So it begs the question.  Do cats know that they’re being yelled at?  And actually understand anger?  Could my cat have left because he was mad at my dad?  Or did he stay away to make sure after a few days my dad’s anger subsided?

Too bad we will never know…

Hi! I’m a new cat owner and was wondering why my cat always pee all over the place when I give him a tug in his choke chain when he doesn’t obey simple commands like “sit” and “stay”? Any suggestions? I don’t feel like I’m getting any farther along with his training.

    Thank you for ANY recommendation,

    Mary Beth

    Hi Mary,

You can’t treat cats like you can with dogs. They don’t tend to know what “sit” or “stay” is.

I wouldnt understand why he would pee though, if you tug on his choke chain unless it’s somewhere genetic in him that might cause his bladder to be uncontrollable when his heck is squeeze?

I recommend taking him to the vets to check out his bladder. I don’t recommend having a choke chain on a cat though.
